The Street Begger
The street-beggar is a familiar figure of Pakistan. He is found in every street, lane, bazar and corner. He goes from door to door for begging.
There are many thousand people in Pakistan who live by begging. In the streets and bazars, you will see them at every corner, begging food from the shops and money from the passers-by. Sometimes they are lame or blind and incapable to work, but are often healthy and strong. These healthy beggars could earn an honourable living, but they find it easier to live upon the charity of other people.
Some beggars are in fact rouges and robbers. They visit several streets at day time just to make a survey of deserted houses where they could commit thefts in the night. They are a social evil and must be eradicated.
Some clever beggars pose to be scholars or pirs and pretend to heal ailments. They are hypocrites who always cheat the ignorant. Most of such beggars are indolent, lazy fellows. They make a good living by begging because the Pakistani people are very charitable, and because they are afraid to refuse a faqir lest he should really be a holy man. They also think that alms given to the poor will bring them blessing in the next life. But their charity really does harm, because it encourages a great number of strong men to be idle and to do no work for their living. Charity is virtue; but those who give alms should see that they are helping the really poor and helpless.
