| The Life of a Policeman The policeman with his khaki uniform and staff is a terror to the poor villagers. But in the towns, the policeman is not feared; there, he has to salute many superiors; however he is a custodian of law and, therefore, an important public servant. The policeman's uniform is quite clean. He has to be always smart, otherwise the officers will take notice of his laziness. He has to take regular exercise, and he has to attend parades. If he is not healthy, he cannot perform the hard duties of patrolling and watching. he policeman's duty are many. In the cities,he has to control the traffic. It may seem strange that people obey a single policeman. When he puts up his hand on the road, carriages and motor-cars must stop. The reason for this is that the single policeman has all the force of the law behind him. The, he has to tour the villages, in the company of police officials. He has to serve summons, arrest criminals and escort them. He has also to perform guard's duty. If there is a fight, the policeman has to be very careful. Sometimes, he has to disperse unlawful assemblies by lathi charge. His life is not a bed of roses, it is a continuous struggle. He knows no holidays. He has to be active day and night. His pay is very small and he can hardly make his both ends meet. Most of the people do not like policeman. It si because in past days the policeman were corrupt and accepted bribes. But now after the October Revolution, the policeman also have learnt to respect law and order. They hav now started to realize their obligations towards countrymen. | |
