| The Life of a village Patwari The patwari is one the most useful servants of the Government. He has to keep the records, the maps, and a number of registers concerning the lands, boht irrigated and barren. His maps are so accurate that form them you can know such minor details as the shape of the particular field and the positions of wells and footpaths. He also assesses the amount of land revenue which a cultivator should pay. For this purpose, he has to measure the area under cultivation, belonging to a particular person, calculate the quantity of harvest to be reaped and assess the revenue that he should pay. He represents the Government in the village. He ia power there, though with the increase of education and knowledge the people are less afraid of him today than they were some time ago. however, he commands the respect of the villagers to a very great degree. They fear him beacuse he can, with a slight change in his register, harm them very much. They try to please him and supply him grain, grass and fuel. Whenever there is a dispute about a piece of land, the patwari has to appear as a witness. The civil courts always like to trust his evidence, for he is an expert on matters relating to land. His pay is very small. He leads a simple and hard life so that he has little time for recreation. In short, he is the most influential man in the village, a trusted servant of the Government and a well-wisher of the people. | |
